We classify the pure states of a spin-s system into oriented and non-orient
ed states. A pure state is said to be non-oriented if it is not an eigensta
te of S-2 and S-z with respect to any axis of quantization. If it is an eig
enstate it is oriented. In this paper, we discuss the notion of spin squeez
ing in these states. Our analysis shows that the oriented states are not sq
ueezed while non-oriented states exhibit squeezing. We also present a new s
cheme for the construction of spin-s states using 2s spinors oriented along
different axes. Taking the case of s = 1, we show that 'non-oriented' natu
re and hence squeezing arise from the intrinsic quantum correlations that e
xist among the spinors in the coupled state.
