Novel wide rejected band devices are obtained using chirping techniques in
one-dimensional photonic bandgap microstrip structures with the ground plan
e etched following a periodic pattern. Full-wave electromagnetic simulation
s and measurements are provided to compare the frequency responses of struc
tures with a linearly varying period (chirped devices) and those of structu
res with a constant period (nonchirped or conventional devices), showing th
e increased bandwidth obtained. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
