Eating disorders are common in contemporary society. New information is eme
rging on the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and inclu
des psychologic, biologic, family, environmental, genetic and social factor
s. The physician providing care to adolescents is challenged to carry out a
careful evaluation and monitor the patient for complications, especially l
oss of bone mass. Treatment requires a multidisciplinary team.
