Calculations of the photoionization cross section for the atomic iodine ato
m and its ions I- and I2+ using the random-phase approximation with exchang
e are performed in a broad photon energy range from 40 to 136 eV. A signifi
cant (factor of 3) difference between recent experimental data and our theo
retical results is found in the region dominated by the giant resonance fro
m the 4d subshells. Sum-rule analysis suggests that the experimental situat
ion requires reexamination.
