Sp. Godfrey et Dc. Samuels, Stable superfluid vortex filament structures in laminar boundary layer flow of helium II, PHYS REV B, 61(6), 2000, pp. 4190-4195
We show that in laminar boundary layer flow of superfluid helium II, with t
he normal fluid having a Blasius profile and the superfluid a constant velo
city profile, that there can exist superfluid vortex filament configuration
s that have a steady shape and do not dissipate even at nonzero temperature
s. We describe the parameter ranges within which these vortex structures ar
e stable. The vortex structures transfer the kinetic energy of the normal f
luid away from the boundary, and thus may cause instability in the normal f
luid boundary layer.
