The stability and dynamics of Pt dimers on Pt(110)-(1 x 2) are studied usin
g fast-scanning, variable-temperature STM. The kinetics of both dissociatio
n and association of dimers have been quantified from a direct analysis of
time-lapse STM movies. The extracted barriers are at variance with results
from ab initio calculations, and we speculate that the discrepancies are du
e to trace amounts of gas impurities such as CO.
