Abstract
This paper shows the results of the first phase follow-up study during one and two years considering some of the findings in the sub-projects, related to the proposed objectives in a quasiexperimental study on the rehabilitat ion of psychiatric schizophrenic outpatients. The general objectives of thi s project were: keeping their clinic stability, improving their psychosocia l functioning, their daily performance and the functioning of their familie s. The methodology employed has been describes in other publications. The i nstruments used in this analysis were: The Composite Internacional Diagnost ic Interview (CIDI), the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), the DiMascio's Extrapiramidal Symptoms Scale, the Daily Performance Scale, the Assessment and Following Questionnaire, Music/Activity Intake Assessment fo r Psychiatric Patients. Family evaluation was made through the CIDI, the Fi ve Minute Speech Sample (FMSS), which evaluates the expressed emotion (EE), and the SEAS, which assesses the patient behavior through the responsible relative. In the following year, patients of the experimental group had 9.5 % relapses compared to 26.6 % of the control patients. On the other hand, the patients of the experimental group had 0 % relapses with hospitalizatio ns when compared to 26.6 % of the control patients. During the second year, relapses in the experimental group were 4.7 %, and 33.3 % in the control g roup, while relapses with hospitalization were 4.7 % in the experimental pa tients, and 13.3 % in the control patients. The achieved daily performance in the experimental group at the end of the treatment did not show signific ant changes after one year. In conclusion, the program is efficient for the rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients, and for their relatives, not onl y at the end of the treatment, but two years after.
