The fluency theory provides a powerful model for describing various types o
f analog signals, by introducing a set of piecewise polynomial functions an
d their dual orthogonal functions which are classified in terms of their co
ntinuous differentiability. In this paper, we propose a method to approxima
te a set of given data points based on the fluency theory and give an examp
le of its application. Results show the possibility of better approximation
s by adaptively employing fluency functions of different classes. (C) 2000
