Abstract
Measuring the total concentration of an element in a sample without also de termining its chemical form or its oxidation state does not provide suffici ent information for assessing the toxicity of the sample. Elemental speciat ion is a broad analytical topic and represents an increasing challenge for the analytical chemist with respect to potential new legislation based on t he actual toxicity of specific chemical species.
