D-type cyclin homologs have been found in the genomes of herpesviruses asso
ciated with neoplasias. They appear to exploit features of G(1) cyclins but
extend their properties to allow for deregulation of the cell cycle. Advan
ces in the study of the molecular basis for these novel features as well as
the potential role of viral cyclins in tumorigenesis are addressed.
