Coronary aneurysms and obstructive lesions are the most serious compli
cations associated with Kawasaki disease and can cause chronic myocard
ial ischemia or acute myocardial infarction. Because of improvements i
n medical treatment, such as the use of gamma globulin,(1) such patien
ts are living longer, so that the incidence of ischemic heart disease
in such cases is expected to increase.(2) Balloon angioplasty may be e
ffective, especially in patients with acute coronary syndromes, but th
ere are few reports on the use of this method(3) in patients with Kawa
saki disease. We used balloon angioplasty to treat a patient with Kawa
saki disease with a giant coronary aneurysm who experienced an acute m
yocardial infarction.
