As well as being used to impart tannin stain resistance and flame retardanc
y to coatings, boron-based additives ton provide protection against biologi
cal attack, in the wet state and in the dry film. Deeper protection within
the wood is possible and this raises the possibility of the onestep coating
and pre-treatment of joinery. This paper reviews the role of borates in ex
terior wood coatings and highlights potential areas for future research foc
us.
