Young's modulus and the rigidity modulus of Cu-Cd mixed ferrites with diffe
rent values of cadmium ion content have been determined using the ultrasoni
c pulse transmission technique at 1 MHz. The variation of the elastic modul
i with composition has been interpreted in terms of the binding forces betw
een the atoms of the spinel lattice. It is observed that the binding streng
th in Cu1-xCdxFe2O4 for a given value of x is higher than that for the corr
esponding Cu-Zn ferrite having the same value of x. For this system the rig
idity modulus shows a linear variation with Young's modulus as in the case
of Cu-Zn ferrites. It is concluded that there is a close correlation betwee
n the elastic behaviour of Cu-Cd fir-rites and that of Cu-Zn ferrites. (C)
