Abstract
Black applications to medical school dropped sharply in the last half of th e 1990s. One cause may be the ban on affirmative action admissions at big m edical programs in California and Texas, as well as restrictions on race-se nsitive admissions in other states. It is possible too that improved opport unities in other professions may be directing many young blacks to graduate work in fields other than medicine.
