Abstract
Racism has a habit of sticking around until someone takes some pretty stron g measures to root it out. Not many years ngo there were hundreds of rivers , mountains, lakes, and other geographical locations that contained the wor d "Nigger." Then in 1962 a U.S. government agency outlawed the use of these names. In many cases "Nigger" was simply changed to "Negro." Today, there remain 557 places in the United States that continue to have t he word "Negro" in their names. There are nine place-names that use the wor d "Darkey." And don't forget "Coon." There are 77 of them in Missouri alone .
