Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the switching characteristics of a terahertz opti cal asymmetric demultiplexer (TOAD) considering the gain and phase response of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) to control pulses. The saturati on depth of the SOA depends on the energy of the control pulse when the wid th of the control pulse is smaller. However, when the control-pulse width i s increased to a certain extent, the saturation depth of the SOA reaches a steady value, which is governed by the power of the control pulse rather th an its energy. To assure a perfect switching window of the TOAD, a large co ntrol pulse width should be avoided. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
