lA series of mercury superconductors, HgBa2-xSrxCuO4+delta up to x = 0.45,
was prepared by the encapsulation method under an oxygen partial pressure c
ontrolled by the redox couple Mn3O4/Mn2O3. The optimum log p(O-2) value of
the preparation is approximately linearly proportional to the Sr content. T
o achieve constant oxygen stoichiometry, delta, the phases with higher x sh
ould be annealed under more reducing conditions than those with lower x. An
explanation for this observation is proposed, based on the changes of the
Ba/Sr-site coordination. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
