Reaction of [(n-C4H9)(4)N](2)[Mo2O7] with concentrated hydrochloric acid in
an aprotic solvent yields a molecular molybdenum oxychloride anion [Mo2O5C
l4](2-) as a tetra-n-butylammonium salt. X-ray structural analysis of [(n-C
4H9)(4)N](2)[Mo2O5Cl4]. 1/3(C2H5)(2)O revealed that the dimeric anion consi
sts of two MoO3Cl3 octahedra sharing a common face with a relatively long M
o-Mo distance (3.279 Angstrom). The compound has the highest acidity as a p
olynuclear molybdate isolated so far. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd All rig
