The syntheses of mono-, di-, tri- and tetranitroxanthones via intramol
ecular Friedel-Crafts acylation of nitrated 2-phenoxybenzoic acids as
well as via selective stepwise nitration of xanthone and the nitroxant
hones gained from the first route are described. The synthesized nitro
xanthones investigated by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) anal
ysis show a surprisingly high thermodynamic stability which was confir
med by quantum chemical calculations.
