Abstract
Rapid detection of disease, diagnosis of etiology, and implementation of co ntrol strategies are essential steps in managing the challenges of swine en teric diseases. Early detection and diagnosis of enteric disease are partic ularly critical in the nursery-through-finisher phase because of the magnit ude of economic effects. The goal of this article is to provide the practit ioner with an overview of six common enteric diseases affecting pigs from t he nursery through the finisher. Etiology, epidemiology, clinical signs, pa thology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention, and control are discussed. Th e diseases covered include Escherichia coli postweaning diarrhea, rotaviral enteritis, salmonellosis, porcine proliferative enteritis, swine dysentery , and porcine intestinal spirochetosis.
