Rapid detection of disease, diagnosis of etiology, and implementation of co
ntrol strategies are essential steps in managing the challenges of swine en
teric diseases. Early detection and diagnosis of enteric disease are partic
ularly critical in the nursery-through-finisher phase because of the magnit
ude of economic effects. The goal of this article is to provide the practit
ioner with an overview of six common enteric diseases affecting pigs from t
he nursery through the finisher. Etiology, epidemiology, clinical signs, pa
thology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention, and control are discussed. Th
e diseases covered include Escherichia coli postweaning diarrhea, rotaviral
enteritis, salmonellosis, porcine proliferative enteritis, swine dysentery
, and porcine intestinal spirochetosis.
