Aa. Bennett et al., Complications of "dropped" gallstones after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: technical considerations and imaging findings, ABDOM IMAG, 25(2), 2000, pp. 190-193
New laparoscopic techniques have revolutionized the practice of surgery. La
paroscopic cholecystectomy has become one of the most commonly performed su
rgeries worldwide. Although shorter hospital stays and patient comfort have
offered clear advantages over open cholecystectomy, the technique has resu
lted in several specific complications, including bile duct injury and gall
bladder perforation. Although rarely clinically significant, intraperitonea
l gallstone spillage can cause abscess formation and adhesions. Although th
ese patients can present with a confusing clinical picture, their character
istic radiologic features should be recognized. We present two cases of com
plicated intraperitoneal gallstone spillage radiologically diagnosed and tr
eated with laparoscopic and interventional radiologic techniques.
