Abstract
In the course of the development work numerous technological problems, such as the, steel feeding system, casting roller design, side contai nment, etc. have been overcome. As a result, it is now already possibl e to cast entire heats from steel ladies of over 90 t capacity into st rip. The surface and internal quality, the geometry and the edges have been steadily improved to the extent that, in the meantime, more than 70% of the strips direct-cast from austenitic stainless steel are bei ng processed further in production. The findings of the strip casting development work are now being applied to high-silicon steel grades an d carbon steels. An ambitious goal has thus moved tangibly closer to b eing put into industrial practice. For partners Usinor Sacilor and Thy ssen Stahl AG it is not a question of whether, but simply when, a comm ercial line will take up production.
