Abstract
A linear Hamiltonian system with periodic coefficients is subject to a small ''dissipative'' perturbation that makes it asymptotically stabl e. The conditions under which the perturbation remains dissipative for all Hamiltonian systems sufficiently close to the original one are di scussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
