The dynamics of che photo-excited states in crystalline thin films of a mod
el oligo(para-phenylene vinylene) is studied with femtosecond pump-probe sp
ectroscopy. The process of amplified spontaneous emission and the correspon
ding optical gain are shown to depend drastically on the crystallographic o
rder present in the films, The results stress the important role of the mol
ecular orientation in order to obtain efficient light-emitting conjugated o
