Control and eradication of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrom
e (PRRS) has been the focus of swine practitioners and scientists since 199
2. Today, such methods as nursery depopulation, gilt development, and vacci
nation can successfully control the disease. Proper use of diagnostic tests
, including ELISA and polymerase chain reaction, is important in determinin
g the point of PRRS virus infection by stage of production. Eradication of
the disease using the test and remove protocol is currently being studied a
nd appears to be successful on an 'individual farm basis.
