Abstract
In a related paper (Jones et al., Comput Mech, 1998;22:413) the problem of maximizing the depth of penetration by a normally impacting cylindrical pro jectile by optimizing the nose geometry was considered. These results were accomplished by neglecting any frictional resistance offered by the target and only considering the normal pressure acting against the penetrator nose . The problem of maximizing the penetration depth achieved by the normal im pact of a cylindrical projectile including the effects of friction acting o n the penetrator nose is a much more challenging problem. In this paper, th e normal impact and penetration problem is considered including the effects of pressure-dependent friction. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
