Type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents is a complex disease requiring
multifaceted care. Children are managed with a combination of insulin by in
jection or pump, meal planning, and blood glucose self-monitoring. Close fo
llow-up by a pediatric diabetes treatment team is recommended for most chil
dren. Concerns related to short- and long-term complications and the comple
xity of day-to-day management comprise the difficulties reported by parents
and their children with type 1 diabetes.
