Directional Compton profiles of single crystals of bismuth, Bi[100]. Bi[110
] and Bi[111] have been measured with high accuracy for the first time usin
g 662 keV gamma-radiation from a Cs-137 isotope source. Korringa-Kohn-Rosto
ker (KKR) semi-relativistic calculations were performed to calculate the th
eoretical electron momentum density distributions along the three main crys
tallographic directions. The calculated and measured Compton profiles agree
very well in periodicity of the oscillatory character of directional Compt
on anisotropies whereas the predicted amplitude of the oscillations is twic
e that measured in the experiment.
