Nucleon-nucleon S-wave scattering is studied by using the resonating group
method, which includes not only the nucleon and Delta but also their excite
d states. As quark-quark interactions, the one-gluon-exchange and one-pion-
exchange potentials are employed with phenomenological confinement potentia
l. Compared with the N and Delta, coupling effects induced by excited-state
baryons are small. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights
