Abstract
This article documents the place of practice research in Australian social work from 1929 to the present by examining practice research publications a s well as the professional discourse concerning the place of research in so cial work generally. It is concluded that practice research has historicall y occupied a marginal place in Australian social work but that this has bee n changing rapidly in the 1990s.
