J. Peng et al., Geochemical indication of Sinian bedded siliceous rocks in the Hunan-Guizhou-Guangxi area and their environmental significance, ACT GEO S-E, 74(1), 2000, pp. 46-53
In the Hunan-Guizhou-Guangxi area there have developed very thick bedded si
liceous rocks of the late Sinian. The rocks have a fairly pure composition,
with an average content of siliceous minerals exceeding 95%. They are rela
tively rich in Fe and Mn, and poor in Al, Ti and Mg. The Fe/Ti, (Fe+Mn)/Ti,
Al(Al+Fe+Mn) and U/Th ratios and the Al-Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn-(Ni+Co+Cu)x10 tria
ngle diagrams all show that they are hydrothermal sedimentary siliceous roc
ks. In the rocks the total amount of REEs is low, the delta Ce shows an obv
ious negative anomaly and the delta Eu a weak anomaly, and LREE>HREE, all i
ndicating that they are products of hydrothermal processes. The delta(30)Si
and delta(18)O values, as well as the formation temperature of the rocks a
ll clearly show that the silica forming the rocks comes from hot water. Bes
ides, analyses of the depositional environment of the rocks using the MnO/T
iO2 ratio and the delta Ce and delta(30)Si values yield the same conclusion
that they are formed in environments from continental marginal slopes of a
bathyal environment to oceanic basins of a deep-sea environment.
