A two-dimensional model is presented simulating the combustion characterist
ics of a non-premixed natural gas flame under high strain. The model takes
account of the turbulent flow characteristics, the reaction rates controlle
d by mixing and chemical kinetics mechanisms and heat transfer with convect
ion and radiation. Three turbulence models, two two-equation models and one
second order, are assessed and evaluated with respect to accurate predicti
on of the turbulence characteristics of the flame. The mechanisms that cont
rol the combustion phenomenon are analyzed. The computational results are c
ompared with experimental data with satisfactory agreement. (C) 2000 Elsevi
