Abstract
Strengthening the high-rise portion of the San Mateo Bridge required work o n nearly every aspect, from the superstructure to the substructure to the p iers and foundations. The retrofit called for upgrading the steel box girde r hinges, drilling new piles, and encasing piers in either concrete collars or steel jackets.
