Abstract
We challenge current thinking about IP over WDM by outlining a path to opti cal data networking that includes multiple data networking protocols couple d with a protocol-neutral optical networking infrastructure. Included is a discussion of the diversity of data networking protocols and network archit ectures for optical data networking.
