M. Kostoglou et Ag. Konstandopoulos, Particulate deposit shape evolution on cylinders in cross-flow at high Stokes numbers, J AEROS SCI, 31(4), 2000, pp. 427-436
We present an asymptotic (in the limit of high Stokes number) treatment of
the problem of thick deposit growth dynamics due to inertial impaction of p
articles on cylinders in cross-flow. Results from discrete particle simulat
ions are used to account for the dependence of the sticking fraction of the
particles and the microstructure of the resulting deposit on impact veloci
ty magnitude and angle of incidence, while deposit erosion is taken into ac
count employing correlations based on experimental data for brittle ceramic
materials. The problem is formulated in terms of a single equation describ
ing the evolution of deposit shape that is solved with the method of lines.
Furthermore we present conditions for the existence of steady-stare deposi
t shapes (obtained analytically) and demonstrate the effects of the interpl
ay between deposit microstructure, particle sticking/rebound and deposit er
osion on overall deposit shapes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd All rights r
