Abstract
This paper describes the design, operational goals, and some science accomp lishments of the CoolSpec near-infrared spectrometer on the McDonald Observ atory 2.7 m Harlan Smith telescope. CoolSpec is a novel and economical desi gn, in which an existing infrared imager is mated to a separate spectrograp h, both of which are separately cooled.
