Abstract
It was demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy that gamma-radiation catalyzes hydrogen isotope exchange in crystal hydroxyls of kaolinite and montmorill onite (bentonite). At a gamma-radiation dose of 1.2 x 10(7) Gy about 10-15% of hydroxyls are involved in deuterium exchange. Radiolytic deuterium exch ange is observed in all the major types of crystal hydroxyls of kaolinite e ven in the initial stages of irradiation. Lowering dose by an order of magn itude (to 10(6) Gy) decreases the degree of exchange by a factor of about 3 .
