N. Narita et Y. Sugiura, A comparison of subjective picture quality evaluation methods for different television systems, SMPTE J, 109(3), 2000, pp. 193-199
This paper describes a comparison of two methods that evaluate picture qual
ity in different television systems. One presents a pair of test sequences
simultaneously on two identical HDTV monitors and the other presents them s
uccessively on a single monitor. New viewing conditions modifying the conve
ntional ones for a single monitor are proposed then, sensitivity to impairm
ents in the test using two monitors is compared with that using a single mo
nitor. The method using two monitors has merits and drawbacks, therefore, a
new method containing the advantages of both methods is proposed and its v
alidity is verified. In addition, it is clear that in the paired comparison
(PC), the way in which a pair of sequences is presented may affect the ass
essors' opinion scores; therefore, they should be presented twice in the re
verse order or in the opposite position.
