Samarium benzoate was synthesized through hydrothermal reaction. The comple
x was characterized by elemental analysis, IR and X-ray powder diffraction.
It is monoclinic and has layered structure. The mechanism of thermal decom
position for samarium benzoate was studied by using TG, DTA, IR, and gas ch
romatography-mass spectroscopy. The thermal decomposition of samarium benzo
ate in nitrogen proceeded in two stages: first it decomposed to form Sm2O(C
O3)(2) and organic compounds, then Sm2O(CO3)(2) decomposed further to form
samarium oxide and carbon dioxide. The organic compounds obtained from the
first step of the thermal decomposition reaction were mainly benzoic acid,
benzophenone, 9,10-anthraquinone, 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran and so on.
