I review the initial physics program for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collide
r (RHIC) now under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The cent
er-of-mass energy in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC, root s = 200 GeV/nucleon
, will increase the available energy by a factor of 10. RHIC will begin ope
ration in fall 1999, with a suite of four complementary experiments.
