The scattering characteristics of plane acoustic waves by fluid-saturated p
orous cylinders are studied by using the Biot-Stoll's theory with considera
tion of loss factors, such as the viscosity of fluid and the nonelastic los
s of solid skeleton. The backscattering form functions and the scattering i
ntensity patterns of a porous cylinder with sealed and open pore boundaries
are calculated. The boundary conditions and loss factors in porous media a
re found to have a great influence on scattering. By using a broad-band ult
rasonic experiment system, we have measured the backscattering spectrum of
the porous cylinder sample, which is found to be in good agreement with the
predicted results.
