UV irradiation damaged the embryos of the planktonic copepod Calanus s
inicus. The hatching rate was reduced, and the hatched larvae were def
ormed by the UV irradiation at unweighted intensities similar to those
occurring naturally. However, the UV-induced damage was reduced by si
multaneous irradiation with the visible light from a fluorescent lamp.
This photoreactivation may play an important role in reducing the mor
tality of this species in the marine environment.
