The stability of aqueous dispersions of yttrium oxide with respect to 1 : 1
, 2 : 1, and 1 : 2 electrolytes was studied in a wide range of pH values. C
alculation of potential curves of particle interaction In the approximation
of two identical spheres showed that the aggregation stability of the disp
ersions in alkaline media is attributed to electrostatic forces. At the sam
e time, high threshold values of coagulation by 1 : 1 electrolytes in pure
water and in the presence of hydrochloric acid cannot be explained in terms
of the classical DLVO theory and are associated with the existence of stru
ctural forces whose appearance is caused. by the extensive hydration of the
particle surface.
