Swath-bathymetric and seismic reflection data of the ZoNeCo 7 cruise acquir
ed within the New Caledonian lagoon, offshore Noumea, reveal that since the
post-Middle Pleistocene, the Dumbea and Boulari passes have migrated south
eastward and westward, respectively, in building up palaeochannels' sedimen
tary levees. Palaeochannel migrations and asymmetric sedimentary infilling
within the two passes across time are controlled by inherited normal faults
. Upstream of the passes, palaeocanyons represent the submerged extensions
of the Dumbea and La Coulee river beds. (C) 2000 Academie des sciences / Ed
