The analysis of the wave-induced pore pressures and effective stresses in a
poroelastic seabed has attracted attention from marine geotechnical and co
astal engineers in recent years, However, to simplify the complicated probl
em, most previous investigations have been only concerned with the waves pr
opagating over an isotropic seabed with uniform soil characteristics, ignor
ing the anisotropic soil behaviour and variable soil characteristics. This
paper proposes a simple finite element model to investigate the wave-induce
d soil response in a cross-anisotropic seabed of finite thickness with vari
able soil permeability and Young's modulus. The numerical results indicate
that the effects of anisotropic soil behaviour and variable soil characteri
stics on the wave-induced soil response can not always be ignored without s
ubstantial errors. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
