R. Kluender et al., The use of a geographic information system in harvest landing location forground-based skidding operations, FOREST PROD, 50(3), 2000, pp. 87-92
Forest engineers attempt to minimize harvesting operation cost. Efficient l
ayout of harvest operations includes the assignment of roads, skid trails a
nd landing zone (LZ) locations. However, empirical approaches, may not opti
mize LZ placement. Two methods of LZ placement, a geometric solution, and a
n iterative GIS solution, were compared to develop a method of LZ placement
that would minimize total skidding distance and cost.
