Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare locally aggressive mesenchymal tumor that
preferentially involves the pelvic and perineal region in females. The peak
incidence is in the fourth decade of life. Wide local excision is the trea
tment of choice. The tumor has a strong propensity for local recurrence but
distant metastasis has not been reported. Recurrence can develop up to 14
years after initial resection and long-term follow-up is recommended. The t
umors can express estrogen and progesterone receptors but hormonal therapy
is unproved. We describe a patient with aggressive angiomyxoma and review t
he literature.
