A semi-empirical method is tested to determine the spatial distributio
n function of the thermalized photoelectrons, created by vacuum ultrav
iolet (VUV) or gamma irradiations of some liquid alkanes. It seems tha
t modified exponentials must be associated to the thermalization proce
ss on VUV irradiation. A Gaussian distribution function could be used
for high-energy irradiation. The partial inadequacy of the method in t
he case of high-energy irradiation can be imputed to the existence of
multiple ion pair recombinations. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physi
