V. Cochran et al., Design, winding and impregnation of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory high performance magnet, IEEE APPL S, 10(1), 2000, pp. 550-553
We review the capabilities for construction of high performance pulse magne
ts at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) at Tallahassee. P
articular attention is paid to a recently developed series of magnets wound
with strong conductors supported by internal reinforcement. We introduced
a new reinforcement scheme consisting of a Zylon(TM) fiber/epoxy composite
together with the cobalt based multiphase alloy MP35N(TM). Using this new t
echnology, performance is less restricted by excessive strain/stress in the
midplane. Details of the design, winding, impregnation and recent test res
ults are presented.
