The title provides the opportunity and task to both look at specific indust
rial applications in Europe as well as at specific abilities in Europe for
industrial applications in the field of superconducting magnets. For the fi
rst aspect we will review the fields outside of MRI and spectroscopy where
superconducting magnets are being used either because of their unrivaled te
chnical performance or for economic reasons, Applications of superconductin
g magnet technology will then be categorized according to their type, estim
ated volumes, and perspectives also including HTS options. For the second a
spect we look at European players in that field noticing that some big comp
anies had stepped out whereas; others, stimulated by the LHC project, exten
d their activitiy from resistive into superconducting magnet technology. Am
ong the potential customers are big research labs which ambiguously belong
to the group of potential suppliers, too. This last fact also indicates the
tight relationship between research and industrial applications which will
be discussed.
